Former World No. 1, current No. 10 Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark was taken out in the first round of the Porsche Grand Prix, falling to No. 23 Carla Suarez-Navarro of Spain. The tournament is being played in Stuttgart, Germany Apr. 22-28.
Wozniacki, seeded seventh, had an early 3-0 lead, but let it get away, losing the first set 7-6 (8-6). She never recovered after that tie-break loss, losing the second set 6-1. The match time was one hour and 47 minutes.
“I played well and am very happy. Caroline is a very good player and fights. It was a difficult first set, very close,” said Suarez-Navarro, who has reached four finals, including Acapulco, this year but has yet to win a trophy.
Also, fifth-seeded Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic beat wild-card entry Annika Beck of Germany 7-5, 6-7 (0), 6-3. She broke serve for the second time in the final set for a 5-2 lead.
Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic beat Mona Barthel
of Germany 6-4, 6-1.
Barthel said she was fatigued after helping Germany defeat Serbia in the Fed Cup playoffs for a place in the World Group.
Julia Goerges of Germany, who beat Wozniacki for the 2011 title in Stuttgart, advanced to the second round when Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium retired with stomach problems. Goerges was leading 6-2, 2-1.
