Caroline Wozniacki, the defending champion at the MPS Group Championships, successfully defended that title Sunday at Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. The 19-year-old Dane won in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5 over 21-year-old, Olga Govortsova from Minsk, Belarus.
Wozniacki showed great determination in the 1st set, winning easily on three breaks of serve 6-2. Govortsova took a 4-1 lead in the 2nd set and held two set points at 5-3 before Wozniacki came back to win the final set 7-5.
Wozniacki, who is currently ranked No. 2 in the world, was quoted by commentators as saying she has reached No. 2 by learning how to win when she is not playing her best. I would say she proved that in the 2nd set yesterday. Wozniacki commented on her play: “Olga started playing very well in the second set. Everything she hit was going in. I just started stepping into the court, and after I won that long game at 4-5, I kind of had the advantage. We had so many incredible shots in the match, it was all just about hanging in there in the end.”
After the match, Govortsova said: “I had to change something in the second set, so I just tried to attack every single shot I could. I was trying really hard right until the end.
Wozniacki and Govortsova had never met before. Wozniacki is now 7-7 in WTA singles finals. At only 19, it looks like she has a great future ahead of her.
