Each year, several players that did well the previous year aren’t able to play due to injury.  This year is no exception.  For recent injuries, Ivo Karlovic has a foot injury that has been bothering him for some time.  Mario Ancic has a back injury.  Richard Gasquet has a rib injury.  Radek Stepanek has a knee injury.  David Nalbandian is also not playing due to a leg injury.

In addition, Tommy Haas who reached the semifinals last year is recovering from hip surgery.  Juan Martin del Potro is also recovering from wrist surgery.

The 32nd seed is Julien Benneteau.  He is currently ranked 38 in the world, which means there are 6 people ahead of him that were not seeded.  The six are: #8 Juan Martin del Potro (wrist surgery), #22 Fernando Gonzalez (tendinitis–hopes to be back by Toronto), #25 Radek Stepanek (knee injury), #28 Juan Monaco (wrist soreness), #33 Ivo Karlovic (foot injury), #34 Tommy Haas (hip surgery).

As an aside, Wimbledon and all major Slams (and Masters 1000) should have an “injury report” which explains why certain players that should be playing are not playing.  I had to hunt around to find this information.
