Brasil Open feb. 14th
To say this tournament has had some unusual results is an understatement.
Robredo d. Acasuso 6-2 6-1
What… the…. These players have played 6 times, 4 of which split sets and the other two weren’t exactly blow outs. Did Acasuso try to play with his left hand on this one? I know Robredo is solid and all, but this was a thrashing.
I think its still worth mentioning that Gil took out Almagro in the round prior to this…
Bellucci d. Gil 7-6(3) 7-6(4)
The weight of a nation is on Gil to continue these results, and Portugal has been waiting… and waiting… and waiting. Those cork growers over there love their tennis and have a couple decent guys coming down the pipe… but to have Gil starting to play at this level has to be pretty exciting! (Don’t forget his result last week in Johannesburg making the Semi’s before losing to a blazing hot Tsonga)
The finals matchup:
#2 seed Tommy Robredo
26 year old veteran Spaniard ranked 19 in the world with 7 career ATP titles
VS.
Thomaz Bellucci
22 year old brazilian ranked 84 with no carrer titles in his first career ATP final
I’m not going to go too crazy on this one, Robredo wins… Bellucci is still happy to have made a final and has a nice stepping stone here.
Top Players: Nicolas Almagro(1) , Tommy Robredo, Albert Montanes, Jose Acasuso
Underdog Pick: Fabio Fognini Out of the tournament
