One of the biggest questions about Tomas Berdych is, well, the prounuciation of his last name (though his first name is also a challenge for non-Czechs).  It’s mostly pronounced Burr-Ditch.  Some umpires have said Burr-Dish.  There’s also, Burr-Dick.  Recently, Martina said the correct way to pronounce it was the third way.

After checking out a few sites that have native Czechs pronouncing the name, it sounds like his name is pronounce like TOE-mah-sh BARE-dick-huh.  There’s a breathy “huh” at the end of Berdych to capture the “h” sound.  Since this is uncommon in English pronunciation, you’re going to hear it with a hard “k” as in lack, sack, back, when it sounds closer to lack-huh, sack-huh, back-huh, or BARE-dick-huh.  The “huh” is really whisper and not pronounced too aggressively.

Almagro recently beat Jack Sock, but while Berdych has similar power as Sock, he has a great ability to use his wingspan to hit a very solid wide ball that compensates for pure speed.

The key to the match was the first set which Berdych won in a tiebreak.  Then, he took the second set, 64.  By that point, Almagro seemed unable to keep up, and went down 61.

Up next for the Czech player is Roger Federer.  Mardy Fish was scheduled to play Federer, but Fish has withdrawn due to health reasons.  Fish recently beat Gilles Simon in four sets.
