Donald Young had hoped to reach this point much sooner.

But better late than never.  Young followed up his improbable victory over the number 2 Swiss, Stan Wawrinka, last year’s quarterfinalist.  In a way, Young caught a break. Juan Ignatio Chela is a crafty veteran, but he lacks a ton of power.  The guy knows how to win, but if you can take the game to him, you have a chance, and Young took his chances.  Match score: 7-5, 6-4, 6-3

Rafael Nadal was pressed for about a set when David Nalbandian had a break in the first and was attempting to serve it out when Nadal broke and then won a tiebreak over an error-prone, Nalbandian.  Nadal would cruise 6-1, 7-5 in the second and third sets to reach the fourth round once again.  Nalbandian tried to play aggressive, but much like Davydenko last night, the Argentine couldn’t keep his error rate down to make it competitive.

Andy Roddick, the 21st seed, finally ended the long run of Julien Benneteau who went through qualifying to reach the Winston-Salem main draw last week and went all the way to the final before losing to Isner.  Normally, when a player puts so much effort in one tournament, he’s exhausted in the next.  However, Benneteau, who was given France’s wildcard into the US Open, kept on going, winning his first two rounds handily, before meeting a tough Andy Roddick.  Roddick finished Benneteau’s run with a 6-1, 6-4, 7-6 run.

David Ferrer shows why he is fifth seed with his steady dispatch of the 26th seed, Florian Mayer, 6-1, 6-2, 7-6.

Gilles Muller continues rolling as he’s avoided playing any seed so far.  He beat Ernests Gulbis in the second round who beat Youzhny in the first round.  Muller beat Kunitsyn today in straight sets.  Kunitsyn took out Melzer in five long sets in the previous round.  Muller has set up a date with Rafael Nadal who will probably end his US Open run although Muller did beat Rafa at Wimbledon years ago.  Muller played Nadal in the third round of Wimbledon a few weeks ago and took him to two tough tiebreaks before losing the third set handily.  Muller plays a hard hitting game and once upset Roddick the year after his US Open win.

Currently, Juan Martin del Potro is fighting for his life.  After taking the initial set, del Potro lost the next two, and found himself down a break in the fourth.  He broke back, and is now on the verge of breaking to win the fourth set.  However, Simon just won 5 points in a row with a serve-and-volley point, and a good point setup for a winner, than some good serving, before just out-steadying him.  The two played each other back in 2008 at the US Open, in the fourth round, a breakthrough year for both players.

Still up is John Isner against Alex Bogomolov Jr., and the evening match of Andy Murray vs. Feliciano Lopez.
