There’s long been a lament that British tennis is too nice to win. Before there was Andy Murray, there was Tim Henman who pretty much overachieved for his ranking. He never got to the finals of a Slam, but he reached the Wimbledon semis numerous times and even reached the French semi once. Before that, there was maybe John Lloyd. Andy Murray is, by far, the best talent they’ve had since Fred Perry even if he hasn’t won a Slam yet. Reaching a Slam final, which Murray has done three times, is better than any Brit has done in some time, perhaps since John Lloyd reached the Australian Open final back when none of the top pros played the event down under.
But, if the juniors are to be believed, there’s about to be a whole bevy of British players coming up. In particular, in the semifinals of the US Open, there are three Brits and that doesn’t include a Brit that didn’t make it that far, Liam Broady.
The three players are George Morgan, Oliver Golding, and upstart, Kyle Edmund (pictured above). The only non-Brit in the bunch is top seed, Jiri Vesely, of the Czech Republic. Liam Broady, who reached the finals of junior Wimbledon, and beat top seed, Jiri Vesely, lost to Halebian in the US Open, an American.
We’ll see if any of the 3 are capable of upsetting the top seed.
