Perhaps Nike is pushing the pink.  Nadal came out with a bright magenta-pink outfit that tries to show off his chest.  Nadal also came out rusty making all sorts of unforced errors against Stanislas Wawrinka.  This kept Wawrinka fairly even in the match.  Wawrinka even had chances to take the first set.  However, Wawrinka was making errors of his own, and was unable to string enough points to win the first set.  The first set ran an hour and a half with the tiebreak going to 14 points to 12.

By the second set, Nadal was able to tame his strokes and won it more easily, 6-3.  It goes to show that the top players are able to play just steady enough tennis until they recover, and players like Wawrinka aren’t able to hit the big shots when they need to.

Speaking of rust, despite Davydenko having been back on tour since right around Wimbledon, he’s still struggling to find consistency in his game.  Normally, he is a machine, able to run down shots and apply pressure again and again.  Today, against Fabio Fognini, he was struggling to keep more than 3 shots in a row in, spraying forehands all over.  Except that he did this mostly on Fognini’s serve.  Fognini was no better off, so the first set was pretty even until Davydenko engineered a break late in the first set.

In the second set, Fognini was upset at a call.  Since the Hawkeye system is only used in the main courts, and this was one of the side courts, there was no challenge.  Apparently, this so upset Fognini that he lost the second set rather handily, 6-1.

Verdasco is eliminated early by Jeremy Chardy in three sets, 6-2 in the third.  Djokovic had to work hard to beat Julien Benneteau, 7-5, 7-5, getting a late break in each set.  David Nalbandian continues to show exceptional form.  He beat Tommy Robredo handily, 6-3, 6-0.  Yen-Hsun Lu worked hard to beat Paul-Henri Mathieu in a second and third set tiebreak.  Michael Llodra upset Nicolas Almagro who recently won a tournament.

Andy Murray had a tough first set against Xavier Malisse who opened with a break.  Murray broke back twice and took the first set, 7-5.  The second set went more easily, 6-2.  Sam Querrey again loses early in a big event, this time to fellow big guy, Kevin Anderson, 6-4 in the third set.  Anderson gets Rafa in the next round.

Third round play continues tomorrow.  Some interesting matchups.  Federer gets to play another player older than him, Michael Llodra.  Llodra will try his serve and volley tactics against the Fed.  Tomas Berdych takes on the talented Dolgopolov.  If Federer and Berdych win, they will meet each other in the quarterfinals.

Andy Murray takes on Gael Monfils and David Nalbandian takes on Robin Soderling.  This will be a good test of where Nalbandian is.  Nalbandian hasn’t played a top 10 player as of late, so Soderling will be that guy.  The winner of this match takes on the winner of Murray-Monfils.

Tomorrow is like “Super Thursday” for Toronto with all third round matches being played.  Friday is the quarterfinals which also promises to be interesting.
