Four matches were completed in Tokyo, an ATP 500 event. Mardy Fish played Ryan Harrison for the third time this year and for the third time, he beat him. Harrison did push Fish to a third set, but Fish still claimed the victory 6-4, 3-6, 7-5. Generally, Americans have not fared that well in events after the US Open, perhaps because they play more of the US Open series and are more fatigued or injured than others who choose a limited hardcourt schedule.
Radek Stepanek, the wily Czech veteran, beat Somdev Devvarman in straight sets. Marco Chiudinelli, Swiss #3, upset Guillermo Garciz-Lopez in 3 sets. Chiudinelli will face Stepanek in the next round.
Qualifier Matthew Ebden of Australia upset Pablo Andujar in 3 sets.
Meanwhile, in Beijing, another ATP 500 event, Fernando Verdasco had an easy straight set win over Michael Llodra. Flavio Cipolla upset 8th seed Alexandr Dolgopolov in 3 sets, each set rather lopsided. Feliciano Lopez needed a tiebreak to beat Turk Marcel Ilhan in the second set of a straight set win. Big serving Kevin Anderson upset Andy Roddick in straight sets. Roddick was asked if he was going to retire. Roddick retorted if the reporter was going to retire and left the press conference. As the losses mount, people are going to say Roddick is done.
Marin Cilic had an easy win over Chinese wildcard, Di Wu.
