Lots of play today at the Shanghai Masters. It’s the second round and the top seeds were mostly in action today.
It’s not unusual for players that do well in a previous tournament to fade in the next one. Raonic and Nishikori were finalists in the Japan Open last week. Nishikori lost to Querrey in three sets. Raonic lost to Baghdatis in three tiebreak sets.
Gasquet played Simon in the finals of Bangkok (admittedly a little over a week ago), but both lost today. Simon lost in straight sets to Dolgopolov while Gasquet lost to Stepanek in straight sets as well. Admittedly, both played tough opponents.
Last week’s Beijing finalists, Djokovic and Tsonga, however, continue to play well. Djokovic had a comfortable win over Dimitrov 63 62. Tsonga worked harder to beat Benoit Paire 76 75.
Roger Federer won over qualifier, Yen Hsun-Lu. He’ll face countryman Stan Wawrinka who needed 3 sets to beat Denis Istomin.
Janko Tipsarevic beat countryman Viktor Troicki in two sets. Tommy Haas beat Tommy Robredo in straight sets in his second straight win over a Spaniard. Haas faces Tipsarevic next round.
Tomas Berdych, who lost to Nishikori last week, beat Seppi in straight sets. Instead of facing Nishikori, he’ll play Querrey, who beat Nishikori.
Andy Murray, scheduled to play Florian Mayer, didn’t have to play when Mayer dropped out before the match started.
