Sexy tennis star, Serena Williams, made quick work of her final match in the 2009 Australian Open on Sunday, defeating Dinara Safina 6-0, 6-3. It only took 59 minutes, and was hardly a good championship match. Although Williams did not seem really on her game at the beginning of the tournament, when it counted, she was dominant.
Safina did not win a game until she broke Williams’ serve in the first game of the 2nd set. Williams broke right back, and then went on to close out the set and the match in championship form.
This is Williams’ 10th Grand Slam title, and it allowed her to retake the No. 1 ranking on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour.
Williams has won the Australian Open every odd year four times in a row, winning in 2003, 2005, 2007, and now in 2009. That’s odd!
Safina moved up one spot to the No. 2 WTA Tour ranking. She has not yet won a Grand Slam title. She reached the semifinal only once before in the US Open in 2008. She’s getting close. It probably won’t be long before she has a Grand Slam trophy on her shelf.
