World No. 1, Serena Williams of the USA has announced her return date to the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour after spending over two months on the injured list.
Williams has not competed since she won the Australian Open in January, 2010, her 12th Grand Slam title. She has accepted a wild card into the 2010 Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome, Italy, scheduled for May 2-9.
Williams has been sidelined for most of the tennis season thus far because of a reoccurring knee injury. She was forced to withdraw from Paris, Dubai, Miami, and Marbella last week.
The Internazionali BNL d’ Italia is a Premier event on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour and is one of tennis’ biggest events on clay before Roland Garros.
A couple of questions remain: Will her knee hold up? How rusty will she be after not competing for a couple of months? Will she come storming out strong, brushing her opponents aside like dust in the wind as she has many times, or will her time off have taken its toll and the World No. 1 will begin her slide down the rankings? It remains to be seen! I’m guessing she is running out of wind, out of second chances, and Serena will slip into the category of one of the great past tennis legends.
