SAP Open daily results Feb. 15
Top Players in the tourny: Roddick, Del Potro, Blake, Stepanek
Underdog Pick: Hewitt: Out of the tournament
Stepanek d. Roddick 3-6 7-6(5) 6-4
Stepanek over Roddick… did you call that? Obviously a well contested matchbut a pretty disappointing one to lose for Mr. Roddick. In trying to re-establish himself as a top 5 player, it’d be nice to clean up a wide open tournament like this. I’m not trying to say that Radek who is currently ranked 21 and has been as high as 8 is a slouch… but he should have been a speed bump in the race to an ATP title.
Keep in mind that Stepanek in just the last round was on the ropes losing the first set against the #270 ranked American Todd Widom, that is until Widom flat lined.
Fish d. Blake 6-3 6-2
Pretty boring recap here. We have two players who play all or nothing tennis… given those two options it appears Blake came up with nothing. James is a great player and talented athlete, and I hope he can somehow pull off a miracle against the Fed later on this month in Davis Cup… but how can you win a tournament playing that style? Well he doesn’t… at least not last year. (To be fair, in ’06 he won 5 ATP titles and a pair in ’07)
Fish has the same mentality in the body of a serve and vollier, and I just can’t bet on that holding for 5 matches in a row, so I am changing my pick in this tournament from Roddick to Radek.
