Shortly after Nadal lost to Lukas Rosol in his upset 2nd round bid, Nadal told the press that he would not play until the Olympics, and, oh yes, his knees were bothering him again.

It appears that it’s serious enough that he plans to skip the Olympics this year.

Having won the gold back in 2008, Nadal will, at the very least, not have any regrets about winning gold, but with his absence, things look up for the other players, including Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, and David Ferrer.

And presumably because he’s not participating, he won’t be Spain’s official flag bearer in the opening ceremony.  The Olympics precedes several Masters 1000 hard court events prior to the US Open.  One wonders if Nadal will skip Toronto and Cincinnati.
