Mardy Fish used to lack enough speed and endurance to play much from the baseline. He would get to net. But the last few years, he’s played more baseline. Weight loss has left Fish lean and mean and better able to play long points from the backcourt.
But, against Tipsarevic, Fish came to net a lot, on his serve, on approaches. Much like his match against Wawrinka, Fish started off quick and efficient, leaving his opponent a bit befuddled. Fish started with an early break in the second set but played a bit passive and gave up his own serve. It seemed like the second set would be a tougher affair. But Fish played solid tennis to break Tipsarevic which resulted in a smashed racquet (Tipsarevic, when asked who his toughest opponents were, put himself in the top 3–that is, he fights himself a lot).
Fish went back to being aggressive and this was enough to win the match.
He will face either Djokovic or Tsonga in the finals. They play this evening. Tsonga actually has a lead in their head-to-head. They will meet in somewhat similar fashion as last time which was Wimbledon. At the time, Tsonga upset Federer in five sets. Djokovic won the match in four sets.
