Mardy Fish vs. Nikolay Davydenko seemed like a good match. Davydenko had nearly taken a set off of Djokovic and his game seemed to be getting back in order. Not so much, it turns out. Davydenko is still apparently nervous about his first serve so he spins it in to keep the percentage high. Fish was taking advantage of this and Davydenko’s inconsistent play. This match was a quick 6-0, 6-2 beatdown, not so much because Fish played well but because Davydenko was struggling keeping the ball in play.
The last time Rafael Nadal played Julien Benneteau was last year at this time. Benneteau pushed him to match point, but eventually lost in three sets. This match was close for a little bit, but Benneteau eventually dropped his serve in the first set. He lost his serve early in the second set, but was able to break Nadal. Nadal broke him back and served out the set. Nadal’s looking better, but not super-sharp yet.
Andy Murray was down an early break to David Nalbandian. He was able to break back, but Nalbandian broke again before Murray broke twice to win the first set, 6-4. At that point, Nalbandian’s game started to fade as he made errors, while Murray looked more solid, though still not great, and won the second set handily, 6-1, breaking Nalbandian several times in the second. Murray just needed the win, he felt, to get a few matches under his belt.
Verdasco beat Llodra in straight sets. He will play Nadal in the next round. Murray will take on the winner of Tsonga-Bogomolov. Murray lost to Bogomolov earlier this year at Miami during his post Aussie Open slump.
Monfils came back to win over Ivan Dodig after dropping the first set. Dodig had to retire in the third set. Almagro beat the big-serving Croat, Ivo Karlovic, in a third set tiebreak. Kohlschreiber had an easy win over Feliciano Lopez.
Later on, Djokovic will play Ryan Harrison.
