The top seeds all get byes, so they don’t play until the weekend.  No huge surprises, but that’s because most players playing are ranked 40 or below.

Garcia-Lopez beat Clement in straight sets.  German Florian Mayer beat Swiss Marco Chiudinelli in 3 sets.  Michael Russell makes it past the first round again.  In Indian Wells, Russell made it to the 3rd round and lost to Andy Murray. He gets big John Isner in the 2nd round, however.

The Rochus brothers split results.  Christophe Rochus lost his match to Daniel Koellerer of Austria in 3 sets.  Meanwhile brother, Olivier Rochus beat Richard Gasquet in 3 sets.  Gasquet appeared to be on the road to moving to the top 20 when he reached a final against Marcos Baghdatis prior to the Australian Open.  However, he’s had a few first round losses, so one wonders how his comeback is faring.

David Nalbandian, who was given a wildcard and had been off the tour for a number of months before playing a surprise fifth rubber in Davis Cup, won his first round match easily, 6-3, 6-2, over Lukasz Kubot of Poland.  Illya Marchenko, a qualifier from the Ukraine, beat Paul-Henri Mathieu in a bit of an upset.  Jeremy Chardy beat Mario Ancic.  Ancic made it a few rounds in Indian Wells, but lost handily to Rafael Nadal.  Chardy will play Sam Querrey again for the second time in two consecutive tournaments in the second round.  James Blake needed three tough sets to beat Filip Krajinovic of Serbia.
