No. 28 seed, Christina McHale of the U.S.A. survived a 1st-round match that was called because of darkness on day one of the 2012 Wimbledon Championships with the scored tied 7-all in the final set. The match was resumed on day two only to be delayed by rain after one game. The match was finally concluded with Christina taking the victory over Johanna Konta of Australia 6-7(4), 6-2, 10-8.
When they returned to play after the one hour rain delay, Christina held easily and then had four break points, but Konta remained calm, firing off some solid returns to take the game back to deuce. On the fifth break point, however, Christina jumped at the opportunity, firing at Johanna’s feet which Johanna could not return. Christina then went on to hold for the 2-game lead required because of the no-tie-break in the final set rule at Wimbledon.
Christina will next play No. 80 ranked Mathilde Johansson of Sweden. The two have not faced each other yet.
