Although Andy Murray says his ankle is the best it’s felt in a while, he must surely like the fact that Cilic had to withdraw due to his own injuries. This puts Murray in the semifinals where his opponent is likely to be Andy Roddick. Roddick skipped the French due to injury, but has used the time, one presumes, to train for grass which has been his best chance to win a second Slam. Roddick is currently up 6-2, 3-1 over Verdasco, but there is a rain delay.
Defending champ Sam Querrey went down in three sets to Jamie Ward who is presumably Britain’s number 2, though his ranking is around 216 which is somewhat close to his career high. He should easily move up into the mid 100s or perhaps higher with this performance. Murray would love to have someone that could play number 2 on Davis Cup but without a solid number 2, he’s been skipping Davis Cup ties (one would have hoped his brother Jamie would be that guy, but it hasn’t turned out that way).
Ward will play Frenchman Mannarino in one quarters, the only one where no seed made it through. Nadal will play the Tsonga in the remaining quarter which could be the most intriguing of the matches played so far.
With the withdrawal of Federer from Halle, the tournament is looking decidedly German. Indeed, two Philipps (Kohlschreiber and Petzschner) are in the semifinals. Kohlschreiber beat defending champ Lleyton Hewitt. Petzschner beat rising start Milos Raonic in three sets. Berdych just beat Troicki to make it to the semis. The last semifinalist will be the winner of Monfils and Mayer.
Andy Roddick is on the verge of winning his match over Verdasco as play has resumed. He serves for the match witha 5-2 lead.
