Top Players: Nicolas Almagro(1) (pictured) , Tommy Robredo, Albert Montanes, Jose Acasuso
Underdog Pick: Fabio Fognini Out of the tournament!
Ok, I’ll admit that picking an Italian as the underdog in a red clay tournament full of claycourters was a bit bold, and it got me. I won’t make that mistake again! Obviously Almagro was the pick to win (and a good one) Next time I’ll play to the surface a bit better than that.
Second round results:
Almagro d. Vassallo Arguello 6-4 6-4
Gil d. Granollers(5) 7-5 3-6 6-3
Ferrero d. Dabul 6-1 6-2
Bellucci d. Kubot 5-7 6-4 6-4
Schwank(6) d. 2-6 7-6(4) 7-6(6)
Martin d. Devilder(7) 6-2 7-6(4)
Robredo d. Fognini 6-2 6-2
I look for Almagro to defend this title. As long as its on clay and Nadal isn’t around, Almagro is hard to pick against.
Some interesting matches starting to pop up as always later on in tournaments… Very little suprise that all are “claycourters” now so there should be some serious baseline grinding going on. Extremely tough call on the bottom as to who is going to try to take out my pick of Almagro in the finals but I think I’ll go with Acasuso.
