Federer probably wishes his game would have taken him back to the 1960s when so many tournaments were played on grass. He’d have to adjust, admittedly, to wooden racquets and such, but his game seems so much better suited to grass. Today, in a second round match marked by rain (and a quick roof that closed in a minute or so), Federer dispatches his opponent Alejandro Falla of Colombia 6-1, 6-2. His effort was so easy that he agreed to hit around with a German commentator who can still, apparently, hit a ball over the net, and that effort may have equaled the effort winning the match (they played at least a game–imagine McEnroe doing that for a post-match interview at the US Open).
New number 1 Rafael Nadal was not so lucky. In Queen’s, Nadal was up an early break against Denis Istomin. However, Istomin broke back and was serving at deuce when the rains fell. Queen’s, alas, has no roof, so play was suspended.
Andy Roddick, four time winner at Queen’s, lost in the third round to Israeli Dudi Sela who tooks some chances against Roddick and won 6-4, 7-6. Roddick has never lost this early, and so he may be a little match light heading into Wimbledon.
Cilic is down a set and a break against Michael Llodra when play was suspended. However, Sam Querrey got his match in and in two close sets against Spaniard Marcel Granollers.
Back in Halle, Philipp Kohlschreiber won a close match against Federer Swiss compatriot, Marco Chiudinelli. Jurgen Melzer, French semifinalist, was not so lucky, falling in 3 sets and tiebreaks in the second and third set to Zverev.
Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray are still expected to play at Queen’s once the rain clears.
