Elena Dementieva won the battle of two of our featured tennis cutie pies. Dementieva is seen here reacting after the final point.
It was the No. 1 seed, Elena Dementieva against the No. 4 seed, Caroline Wozniacki in the 2008 WTA Fortis Championships played in Luxembourg Oct. 20-26. Dementieva won the exciting close match in a 3rd set tie-break, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).
That’s a great championship match. It is exciting to see Ana Ivanovic win a championship. But she did it so convincingly, 6-2, 6-1, that it did not make for a good championship match for the fans.
This match between Dementieva and Wozniacki was great for the players and the fans. Of course, neither player wants to lose, but I’d rather lose a close 3-set match like this, than get blown out 6-2, 6-1 the way Ivanovic beat Zvonareva.
Yes, tennis fans, it was a great match between highly ranked players, No. 5 and No. 13. No. 5 came out on top, which is the way it should work if the ranking system is properly telling us who is the better player. However, as we tennis players all know, the better player doesn’t always win. That’s why we keep playing the game. Those of us playing better players always hope to beat them. It is hope that keeps us going!
Congratulations Elena Dementieva. Keep up the good tennis!
