Elena Dementieva continued her dominating form through the Quarterfinals of the 2009 Australian Open. She has yet to lose a match in 2009.
In round four, Dementieva easily defeated 18th seed, Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia, in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. In the Quarterfinals she defeated Carla Saurez-Navarro just as easily, 6-2, 6-2. The farther along she goes in the tournament, the quicker her opponents fall.
Dementieva’s opponent in the Semifinals is No. 2 seed, Serena Williams. Williams has not seemed on top of her game, winning her last match over Svetlana Kuznetsova in three sets, 5-7, 7-5, 6-1. After the 1st set, the match was put on hold while the roof was closed because of the heat. Kuznetsova served for the match at 5-3 in the second set, but could not put it away. Williams came back and won that set and the final set for the victory.
If they both play as they have been playing, I have to pick Dementieva for the win, and the championship.
