As expected, Juan Martin del Potro will not defend his US Open title. He was expecting to mark his return at the end of September in Bangkok, but nothing sooner than that. With only a week before the US Open, del Potro has not played any tournaments since the Australian Open and only started practicing again at the start of August. del Potro had wrist problems then got surgery and has been resting until recently.
Despite a number of months off, del Potro stayed in the top 10 due to his performance at the US Open and the year end championship. He is expected to fall out of the top 10 (barely) soon and then his ranking will plummet shortly after the US Open when he loses the 2000 points he earned for winning the title.
