During the mid-to-late afternoon, storms hit the Washington DC area, which meant matches were delayed until the evening.  As it approaches midnight, matches are still being played to keep on schedule.

Earlier today, which really means, earlier this evening, top seed and Wimbledon finalist, Tomas Berdych beat Andrey Golubev in three close sets: 6-3, 5-7, 7-5.  Golubev won his first title two weeks ago in Hamburg, beating Jurgen Melzer on clay.  Golubev lost in his opening round last week in Gstaad.  He pushed Berdych showing an affinity for the hard courts.

Xavier Malisse upset John Isner taking the third set tiebreak 7 points to 5.  Verdasco had a 6-4, 7-5 win over qualifier Ryan Sweeting.  Marcos Baghdatis needed 3 sets to beat Illya Marchenko of the Ukraine: 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-3.

Andy Roddick is about to be eliminated by Gilles Simon.  Simon played good tennis in the second half of 2008 and reached the top 10, but played poor tennis throughout 2009 and early into 2010, hampered by an injury.  Simon took the first set, 6-3, is up 4-1 with 1 break of serve.

David Nalbandian may be regaining some of the form that made him a top player before the Federer era.  He had been injured as well and mostly played Davis Cup including a heroic effort against Russia in Russia.  He is up 5-1, and about to break again to win 6-1.  Mardy Fish is down a set, 6-4, to Marin Cilic.  Fish and Cilic are on serve in the second set.
