Sam Querrey’s quest to win a clay title came short as Juan Ignacio Chela, once ranked as high as 15 in the world (back in 2004), managed to turn back the clock and beat his younger opponent in three sets. Querrey took the first set 7-5, but Chela showed his clay court prowess and took the second set 6-4, and the third set, 6-3.
Chela can be seen in the photo.
Stanislas Wawrinka had a much easier win over Romanian, Victor Hanescu, winning, 6-2, 6-3. The two play each other again in the first round of Monte Carlo.
No Americans are in the main draw of Monte Carlo which is the third Masters 1000 of the season, and the first of three Masters 1000 on clay (Rome and Madrid are the other two).
