First, Rafa had a much first round than he did last year when he was pushed to a five setter for the first and only time by John Isner. This year, he played Simone Bolleli and had a straight set romp dropping no more than 2 games a set.
Andy Murray’s opponent, Tatsuma Ito, said he would fight hard and make it tough for Murray, but made so many unforced errors in the first set that he practically gifted the first set. Ito recovered in the second set, and it was a lot closer than Murray had hoped for. Murray managed to avoid dropping a set, then cruised in the third set.
Gasquet, Ferrer, and Youzhny had easy straight set wins. Jeremy Chardy did not. Up two sets to none over Yen-Hsun Lu, he had to battle to 11-9 in the fifth before gaining victory.
DiMitrov (who has taken to capitalizing the “M” in his name) had a tough first set against Donald Young before Young collapsed emotionally and lost the next two sets easily.
Stakhovsky needed 5 sets to upset Alexandr Dolgopolov. Jarkko Nieminen beat Andreev after they split sets. Andreev retired in the third set.
