Cutie pie, Serena Williams, of the USA, reached the Finals of the 2009 WTA Sony Ericsson Open in Miami Florida, USA. The World No. 1 ranked player defeated her sister, No. 5 ranked Venus Williams, in a close 3-set Semifinal match, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to earn a berth in the championship match scheduled for April 4, 2009.
The Final match pitted Serena against No. 8 ranked Victoria Azarenka of Belarus. Serena faded in this match losing in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.
Serena Williams had easier going in the early matches, wining the first two rounds in straight sets. The next three rounds each went 3 sets, stretching Serena almost to her limits with two sets going 7-5, and one a tie-break. The final match proved to be too much, and Azarenka was able to post the win and take home the trophy.
Even with that loss, Serena is 21-4 on the season. Not bad, and that still qualifies her for the world No. 1 ranking this week.
