No. 1 ranked cutie pie, Serena Williams, of the USA will face her sister, No. 6 ranked Venus Williams, in the Semifinals of the WTA Sony Ericsson Open in progress at Miami, Florida March 25 – April 5, 2009.
In reaching the Semifinals, Serena Williams had two 2-set matches in the opening rounds followed by two 3-set matches in the next two rounds.
Williams had a BYE into the 2nd round where she defeated fellow country woman, No. 124 ranked Alexa Glatch of the USA quite easily, 6-2, 6-3. Her next victim was No. 34 ranked, Shuai Peng of China, 7-5, 6-2.
The 4th round brought Williams up against a scrappy Zheng Jie of China, ranked No. 17. After a hard fought 3-set match, Williams came out on top 7-5, 5-7, 6-3.
The Quarterfinals proved to be an even closer match against No. 40 ranked Na Li of China. Williams dropped the first set 4-6, then squeaked out a 2nd-set tie-break 7-1. That seemed to break the spirit of Na Li who wasn’t able to keep up the 3rd set. Final score: 4-6, 7-6(7-1), 6-2.
That sets up an interesting Semifinal match between two sisters who have been tough opponents against each other. They met in the Semifinals of the last tournament they played, the WTA Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships. Venus won that hard-fought 3-set match 6-1, 2-6, 7-6(7-3).
Their Semifinal match is scheduled for April 2, 1:00 PM ET. It should prove to be another great match. Whether you like their personalities or not, you have to admit they are two great tennis players.
