Seventh seed Vera Zvonareva from Russia pulled a huge upset by defeating No. 1 seed Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.
With the win, Vera has reached her second successive Grand Slam final, the last at Wimbledon where she lost to Serena Williams.
While everyone has been keeping an eye on Caroline, Vera has been doing just as well, having yet to lose a set in the tournament. Caroline also had not dropped a set in reaching the semi-finals and had only lost 17 games in total, but was immediately in trouble in this match, having to save two break points in the opening game of the match.
The 20-year-old Dane, beaten by Kim Clijsters in the final 12 months ago, was unable to repeat the trick in her next service game however and Vera served superbly throughout the opening set to take it in 45 minutes.
Caroline was committing way more unforced errors than usual – 31 in total in the match – and although she initially recovered from a break down early in the second set, Vera broke in the next game as well for a 3-2 lead.
Vera hit 18 winners (5 aces) with 25 unforced errors (2 double faults); Caroline struck 13 winners (2 aces), with 31 errors (1 DF). Vera converted 4 of 10 break points against Caroline; Caroline scored on only 1 of the 3 break points she reached against Vera.
In the final Vera will now face defending champion and No. 2 seed, Kim Clijsters of Belgium.
