Russian cutie pie, Elena Dementieva, was the 3rd seed in the WTA Tour Ladies Kremlin Cup played in Moscow, Russia, Oct 6-12, 2008. She was defeated in the Semifinals by No. 1 ranked Jelena Jankovic.
Dementieva had a Bye into the 2nd round where she defeated No. 21 ranked Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia in a close 3-set match going into a tie-break, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7-2). Her next round match against fellow Russian, No. 13th ranked Nadia Petrova, was an even closer 3-set match, again going into a tie-break, which Dementieva won 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6).
Dementieva’s Semifinal match against Serbian Jankovic also went three sets, although this one wasn’t quite as close. She started off strong, winning the first set 6-0. She then won only one game in the last two sets, losing them 1-6, 0-6.
Dementieva has had a good year on the tennis circuit, reaching the Semifinals of two Grand Slams, Wimbledon and the US Open. She is currently ranked No. 5 in the world. Her career high ranking was No. 4 on October 25, 2004.
