The big news of the day was someone who didn’t play today. Nikolay Davydenko, who had been playing great tennis up through the Australian Open, withdrew from Indian Wells.
It turns out he had broken his left wrist and is expected to take a few months off to recover. Last year, Davydenko had to take time off after the Australian Open to recover as well, and was only ready to play by the clay court season. This has to be a huge blow to a guy that just got a new clothing and racquet contract with Dunlop.
The remaining top seeds played today. Although few seeds lost yesterday, more seeds fell today. Today, Dudi Sela beat 14th seed, Radek Stepanek, in 3 sets. Simon Greul beat #12 Gael Monfils in 3 sets as well. #30 Janko Tipsarevic retired after 3-2 down to Thiemo de Bakker. #32 Andreev lost to American Michael Russell. #23 Ivo Karlovic lost to Spaniard Nicolas Almagro. #13 David Ferrer lost to James Blake. Ferrer had recently won Acapulco on clay.
The seeds that won: #27 Baghdatis over Arnaud Clement in straight sets. #18 Tommy Robredo over Stakhovsky. #22 Jurgen Melzer defeated wildcard David Nalbandian who has recently returned to tour, most recently playing Davis Cup for Argentina. #9 Tsonga had an easy win over qualifier Matosevic. #28 Feliciano Lopez beat Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu in 3 sets. #6 Robin Soderling had a straight set win over Evgeny Korolev.
The two matches people were interested in was Andy Murray’s return and Roger Federer’s return. Murray beat Andreas Seppi, 6-4, 6-4 but had opportunities to break on more occasions. Murray didn’t look particularly sharp in his win, nor did he look like he was playing particularly different from the Australian Open. He’s starting to get some of his speed back, but still needs a bit of work on his first serve percentage and consistency.
Roger Federer started off well winning the first set, 6-3, but then fell to 5-2 in the second before managing to get it to a tiebreak. Hanescu was striking the ball well while Federer was missing balls he normally makes. Still, Federer almost had the second set, but Hanescu took the last two points of the tiebreak. In the third set, Federer broke early, and then started playing more assertive tennis. He eventually secured a second break and ran away with the set, 6-1.
Andy Roddick is yet to play the last match of the day. He will play Yen-Hsun Lu of Taiwan.
Tomorrow, Djokovic takes on Kohlschriber, Nadal plays Ancic, and Querrey faces Isner.
