So we’ll start by saying a better job of seeding clearly could have been done by throwing darts and a dartboard. I realize they go strictly by rankings, but anyone who thought those would hold strong here are looking ahead a bit to Monte Carlo next week.
I picked Hewitt (pictured) to have a few Strong tournaments at the start of the year and when he was absolutely rotten… my trust in his game faded. Now the question is does making the finals (and/or winning it) change the faith? No. It doesn’t at all. He beat Junquiera the 7 seed in the first round, and that was the best guy he played all tournament! To put it simply, winning a tournament via beating all guys 75-120 doesn’t impress me. That’s IF he gets past 100 ranked Odesnik in the finals, which is questionable.
All that being said I’d love to see Hewitt make a bit of a comeback, at least into the top 20. I can never cheer against somebody who tries that hard, and has that much fight in them. He may act like a jerk now and again and not have the famous Sampras/Federer composure… but he tries just as hard and in my book that counts for something.
John Isner missed an opportunity here, losing in the third set breaker to Odesnik which in my somewhat humble opinion would have guaranteed him a spot in the finals. Bagging his first ATP title would have been HUGE for his confidence, let alone ranking. Hopefully he can rebound and post a decent result in Monte Carlo next week, we’ll soon see!
