Second Round updates
We’ll I don’t mean to be head heavy here but I think I was right… some battles on the court yesterday!
Roddick d. Gulbis 6-3 7-6(3)
Props to both players, Gulbis is only 21… and while I realize Roddick’s return game isn’t the most impressive thing on earth, Gulbis is always pushing the top players, and soon will be one. Roddick takes on Haas next, and although I’ve always liked Haas it just seems like he can’t find a way to win a big match. I’m guessing Roddick wins in straights.
Widom d. Dent 6-7(5) 6-3 6-2
To put it as bluntly as possible, this IS Widom’s career highlight. Unfortunately I think he’s going to get mowed down in the next round against Stepanek but it’s nice to see this result out of a guy who has been floating for a while. I’ll take Stepanek to win in straights, as Widom has to be satisfied and tired sometime here…
Fish d. Isner 6-2 6-7 (4) 7-5
Knew this would be a great match and it showed. I’m a little disappointed as I was cheering for Big John (who is several inches taller than the listed 6’9″ btw) But I’m impressed Mardy was able to keep it together on this one, it seems like his mental game is finally coming along… which is scary. He plays Del Potro next and while I think DP is a much better player, Fish has the capabilities to take him down if he has the day for it. I’m going to give the edge to DP and see if Mardy can prove me wrong twice in a row!
Other second round results:
Del Potro d. Nishikori 6-2 6-2
Blake d. Serra 6-4, 6-3
Querrey d. Gremelmayr 6-3 6-2
Stepanek d. Guccione 6-2 7-6(1)
Haas d. C. Rochus 6-2 7-5
Upset watch: Querrey(6) vs. Blake(3) I realize picking a 6 seed over a 3 seed isn’t exactly the most bold of upset picks… but I think we have a case of a rising star in Sam and Blake is just too hot and cold for my taste.
