Andy Murray accepted a wild card late last week for what promised to be a powerhouse lineup in Basel, but Murray dealt the tournament a blow when he withdrew this morning citing a right gluteal muscle strain. Murray said we woke up early Tuesday morning and felt pain. Although he did have a light practice on Tuesday, and it felt somewhat better, he felt he wasn’t 100% on Wednesday and withdrew. Murray said he had never experienced this pain before.
Because he pulled out, another Swiss player, Marco Chiudinelli was the lucky loser, and took over Murray’s place to play Dutchman, Robin Haase.
Haase has taken the first set, but they are in a second set tiebreak–which Haase has just won 62 76. Chiudinelli had a mini-break twice but couldn’t convert.
Janko Tipsarevic, who had been on a roll, was unable to complete his match. He played Florian Mayer and was down 5-1 before retiring.
More matches to be played later today including Roger Federer.
