In the chaos of Super Saturday, there was one title being decided that went somewhat unnoticed, at least by me.  Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner, who teamed up to win the Wimbledon title last year, were again in the finals facing unheralded Polish team of Frystenberg and Matkowski.  Melzer and Petzschner had been playing pretty dominant doubles.  They only dropped one set to the finals which is quite an accomplishment in doubles.

While the Serena-Sam match had controversy (Serena yelled C’mon before the point was over), this match had its controversy too.  Apparently, in one net exchange, the ball bounced off the leg of one of the German-Austrian team and this created an angle winner.  The umpire didn’t see this bizarre shot so the call stood.

As it turns out, not that it mattered that much.  The final was a 6-2, 6-2 rout, an unusual score in doubles where tight scores are more the norm.

So among the male titlists at the US Open so far:

  • Men’s Doubles: Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner
  • Mixed Doubles: Jack Sock and Melanie Oudin
  • Boy’s Singles: Oliver Golding (UK)
  • Men’s Wheelchair Singles: Shingo Kuneida (he’s not the juggernaut that Esther Vergeer is, but he’s somewhat close)
  • Men’s Wheelchair Doubles: Maikel Scheffers and Ronald Vink (both of the Netherlands)

The Netherlands seem to do well in the wheelchair events.  Many of the 8 participants in the women’s wheelchair events came from the Netherlands.

All that’s left is the men’s final!
