Today, the top four players in the world were out on court and doing what they do best, which is win.
Novak Djokovic beat fellow Serb, Victor Troicki, 6-3, 7-5. Nadal played Taylor Dent and won by a similar score of 6-2, 7-5.
Andy Murray had the toughest match of the top 4. He beat Jeremy Chardy, who had a pretty good week in Toronto in three sets. Murray won the opening set handily 6-3, but the two traded breaks several times in the second set, which ultimately went to a tiebreak that Chardy won. Murray got a break early and broke again at the end to win 6-2.
Nikolay Davydenko is slowly regaining some form. He beat American Robby Ginepri, 6-2, 6-7, 6-2.
Mardy Fish needed two close tiebreaks to beat Fernando Verdasco, 7-6, 7-6.
Soderling needed three sets to overcome Lleyton Hewitt, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. Andy Roddick had a tough two setter over Thiemo DeBakker, 7-6, 6-4. David Ferrer beat Sam Querrey, 7-5, 6-2. Gulbis had his hands full with Jurgen Melzer, winning, 6-7, 6-3, 7-6.
The resurgent Richard Gasquet had an easy win over Michael Berrer 6-4, 6-2.
Roger Federer got up a break with a 5-2 lead before his opponent, Denis Istomin, retired with an ankle injury. Similarly, John Isner retired against David Nalbandian, despite being up 5-4.
Players pretty much play every day until they are eliminated, which makes these one week Masters 1000 pretty tough compared to the Slams where there’s usually a day or two of rest in between rounds.
