No. 2 seed, Maria Sharapova is proving to be quite stingy on the court, refusing to give up any games through two entire rounds at the 2013 Australian Open.
Maria’s latest demolition came over No. 92 ranked Misaki Doi of Japan. After the match, Maria said: “I was just really trying to be focused… But it’s always tough, especially when you’re up a set and a couple of breaks to keep that momentum. You know, I really forced myself to concentrate and just get the job done today.”
Get the job done, she did, just as she had two days earlier against countrywoman Olga Puchkova, her first 6-0, 6-0 victory.
Maria had not played a match yet this year because of a collarbone injury. That means she hasn’t lost a game yet this year.
Maria will now face No. 25 seed, Venus Williams of the USA. I suspect Maria will not serve up a double-bagel this time, and Venus should provide a much tougher match. The way Maria is playing, I’d say she’ll come out victorious.
Maria holds the edge over Venus 4-3 in career matches. Their most recent meeting was last year on red clay in the quarterfinals at Rome, when Maria defeated Venus 6-4, 6-3.
