Brian Baker, who spent 6 years, in and out of surgery, then had the Cinderella story of 2012 where he made the finals of Nice and did reasonably well at Wimbledon and the French Open, was winning his 2nd round match against Sam Querrey when he was recovering for a shot, and his knee buckled, through no apparent sudden movement. He described two parts of his knee sliding, and said that he couldn’t straighten his leg. Despite his litany of injuries, Baker said he had never had a problem with his knees.
This wasn’t the only retirement of the day. Wawrinka beat Kamke ended in retirement in the second set.
Novak Djokovic played his second round match against Ryan Harrison who has had a habit of losing to top ranked players early in Slams, such is his draw. Despite a hard work ethic, Harrison still found the number 1 player too dominating. Djokovic won in straight sets.
Other players advancing in straight sets: Berdych over Rufin, Almagro over Gimeno-Traver, Verdasco over Malisse, Nishikori over Berlocq, Stepanek over Lopez.
Ferrer beat lucky loser Smyzcek in four sets. Smyzcek says he models some of his game after Ferrer. Baghdatis also needed 4 sets to beat Ito of Japan.
Several matches were very close. Janowicz beat two-time NCAA champ, Somdev Devvarman, in 5 sets. He lost two somewhat close sets right away, then dominated sets 3 and 4 with a loss of game, got up a break in the fifth, then lost his serve, then broke again after aggressive play. Both his winner count and error count were very high.
Janko Tipsarevic was pushed to 5 sets by Lukas Lacko and won 7-5 in the fifth.
