Swiss tennis legend Martina Hingis apparently will not attempt a comeback. On The Baseline reports that they have confirmed via one of Martina Hingis’ agents at Octagon today that her comeback rumors are just that—-rumors.
Hingis turned pro in 1995, but chronic foot injuries caused her to retire in 2003 at the age of 22. She remained retired for three years, returning to tennis in 2005, winning three titles and reaching a ranking of No. 6.
Then on Nov. 1, 2007, Hingis was accused of testing positive for cocaine at Wimbledon earlier in the year and was given a two-year suspension. At that point, Hingis announced her second retirement. She denied taking the drug but did not appeal the ruling.
Then in January of this year, rumors were flying right and left that Hingis was going to make a second comeback. Some reports said she wanted to keep playing exhibition tournaments, but that attempting a second comeback were way off the mark. Then in February it was reported that she would be playing a full schedule of World Team Tennis this season.
According to CBS Sports.com, Hingis will play World Team Tennis for the New York Buzz, and will face Serena Williams on July 9 at the Glens Falls Civic Center. Hingis will also play Venus Williams of the Washington Kastles in D.C. on July 7, and Kim Clijsters of the New York Sportimes in Manhattan on July 19.
So World Team Tennis is in for Hingis, but apparently a comeback on the WTA Tour is out.
